The 'Hungry Steppe' irrigated in the 1950s to grow cotton, Sirdaryo is Uzbekistan's smallest region and its least-visited. It rewards the traveller with something rare: a slice of daily rural life untouched by tourism.
A working farming region — cotton, wheat, vegetables. Bazaars here are for locals, not tourists, which is exactly why we go.
History
A layered past
The plain between the Syr Darya and Nuratau ranges was called 'hungry' because it had no water — until the Soviet Union built a canal from the river in the 1950s. Cotton followed, and villages that had been seasonal grazing grounds became towns.
