Elevation

375 m (city) — 2,200 m (Zaamin)

Halfway between Tashkent and Samarkand, most travellers blow past Jizzakh. They shouldn't. The Zaamin National Park in its south is the oldest protected area in Central Asia, and the drive up into the juniper forests is the quickest escape from the plains in the country.

Zaamin is a genuine mountain escape for Tashkent families — expect picnics, samovar tea, and grilled trout every summer weekend.

Jizzakh — history

History

A layered past

The 'Gates of Tamerlane' — a narrow pass between two crags — carries a 14th-century inscription and marks the historical border between the Zarafshan and Syr Darya basins. Zaamin became a nature reserve in 1926.

Best time to visit

When to come

May–September for the mountains. The plain is best April–May and October.
