Step inside the Ichan-Kala walls and the 21st century simply stops. Khiva is the most complete surviving example of a medieval Central Asian city — small enough to walk in an afternoon, hypnotic enough to stay a week.
Khorezm's own kitchen — tukhum-barak (egg-filled dumplings), shivit oshi (green herb noodles). Ceramics here are unglazed and desert-coloured, not the blue of Rishtan.
History
A layered past
Capital of the Khiva Khanate from the 16th century, a slaver town whose reputation kept Europeans away until the Russian conquest in 1873. The inner city — Ichan-Kala — has been UNESCO-protected since 1990.

April–May and September–October. Summer highs push 45°C; winters can freeze the desert around it.

How do I get to Khiva?+
Fly Tashkent → Urgench (90 min), then a 35-minute private transfer to Khiva. Or a scenic 6-hour drive from Bukhara across the Kyzylkum.
Is one full day enough?+
For the walled city, yes. Two nights lets you see it at dawn and evening when the day-tour buses have gone.
Do I need to buy a ticket?+
A single Ichan-Kala combined ticket (~$15) covers all monuments for two days.
