An accidental Soviet-era lake in the middle of the Kyzylkum desert, now the setting for the most photogenic night in any Uzbekistan itinerary: yurt, camels, campfire, silence.
A Kazakh fishing and herding community lives on the north shore. Dinners feature dombra music, fresh lake fish, and horse sausage if you want to try it.
History
A layered past
The lake formed in 1969 when the Syr Darya overflowed into the Arnasay depression. It's since become a permanent 250 km² water body, home to migrating flamingos and a small fishing community — surrounded on all sides by red desert.

When to come
April–June and September–October. Summer nights are still warm enough for a fire; winter is bitter.
