The easternmost city of Uzbekistan and the birthplace of Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur — founder of the Mughal empire and one of the great memoirists in world literature. Andijan today is a working orchard town where the bazaars still smell of quince.

History
A layered past
A capital of the Timurid successor states in the 15th century, later a key stop on the northern Silk Road branch through the Fergana Valley. Babur was born here in 1483 and wrote about the city's melons for the rest of his life.
